Welcome to Gateshead Libraries
Welcome to Gateshead Libraries

Gateshead has a 'core' library service of 12 libraries, a Readers at Home Service and a Mobile Library, plus five libraries operated by constituted groups of volunteers.

Joining our Core Library Service

Joining us couldn't be easier. If you are over 16, just bring along some proof of your name and address and we'll do the rest or join online. If you join online, you can collect your card from any one of 12 branches of Gateshead Libraries, but please remember to bring along that I.D.

Acceptable identification includes:

  • Current Driving Licence
  • Recent Council Tax bill
  • Electricity, Gas, Phone or Water Bill
  • Recent Bank or Building Society Statement

Membership automatically allows you to borrow books. If you want to rent CDs and DVDs, please ask. You must be 18 years and over to rent DVDs. There is a small annual fee to use our computers.

Your library ticket is valid in any one of the 12 libraries which make up our core library service.

If you are under 16 years of age, you may join the library with a parent or carer's signature. If your parents can't come along to the library with you, we will post your ticket to your home address. We also require your parents' permission before you use our computers or borrow CDs.

Borrowing from us

You can borrow up to 20 books, six CDs, six DVDs and two Language Courses from us at any one time.

If you have not finished with your books when they are due back at the library, you can extend the due date by telephone. Just call Your Local Library or 0191 433 8410 and staff will be pleased to help. You can also renew books online. You will need your borrower number (the DD number on your library ticket) and 4 digit PIN.

Use our online library catalogue to search for books, CDs, DVDs and Language Courses. You can search by author, title and keyword. Books may be reserved online and a reservation fee is payable when you call to collect your book. However please note that you are unable to renew or reserve CDs, DVDs or Language Courses online or over the telephone as these services must be paid for at the time of use.

Joining Lobley Hill, Low Fell, Ryton, Sunderland Road or Winlaton Libraries

If you wish to join one of Gateshead's five libraries run by volunteers and you're over 16, just call in with proof of your name and address and you will receive a library ticket for use at that library. Please note that tickets issued at one of these libraries cannot be used elsewhere.

Acceptable identification includes:

  • Current Driving Licence
  • Recent Council Tax bill
  • Electricity, Gas, Phone or Water Bill
  • Recent Bank or Building Society Statement

If you are under 16 years of age, you may join the library with a parent or carer's signature. If your parents can't come along to the library with you, your ticket will be posted to your home address. Your parents' permission is also required for computer use

Borrowing from a Volunteer Library

Membership automatically allows you to borrow up to 20 books at any one time. There is a small annual fee to use a library's computers

If you have not finished with your books when they are due back at the library, you can renew them by calling the library you borrowed them from. The number should be on the date label of your books or find it in our list of local libraries. You can also renew books online. You will need your borrower number (the DD number on your library ticket) and 4 digit PIN.

Use our online library catalogue to search for books by author or title. Books held at a volunteer run library may be reserved by telephone or in person but may not be reserved online.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
