Rapper Dances

double front jump!

Rapper dances differ greatly throughout the North East. Many teams have their own specific figures which have been passed down generations and help keep the traditions of the team alive. The figures are grouped together to form dances which vary in intricacy, speed and stepping from team to team? In this video clip we see the High Spen Team performing a very energetic dance.

Dancers rotate under their swords

The dances are accompanied by music which can played on anything from a fiddle to a whistle, although the preferred instrument today is often the melodeon.

The rapper star

All of the dances are performed with a short sword or rapper sword, which is a strip of flexible steel about one inch wide with a handle at each end. The dance almost always ends with the linking of the rapper swords to form a star. This is demonstrated in the video clip below by the Earsdon rapper team.
