The Sage Gateshead has been named as the Local Authority Building of the Year at the 2005 British Construction Industry Awards.
The judges described the building as "Yet another superb civic project from Gateshead Council". They continued "The Sage Gateshead is much more than a worthy project for its patrons and sponsors. It is great value. Overall the result is an unstuffy, affordable and easily navigated musical arts centre."
Representatives from the Council attended the presentation evening at the Grosvenor Hotel in London, where they were presented with the award by Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
